Brian A. Benjamin is a politician and businessman from New York who was appointed by Governor Kathy Hochul to serve as lieutenant governor from September 9, 2021 to April 12, 2022. He previously served as the Democratic Party's New York State Senator for the 30th district from June 5, 2017 to September 9, 2021. In a special election in May 2017, Benjamin, a political leftist, was elected to the New York State Senate for the first time. He represented the 30th Senate District in the New York State Senate from 2017 to 2021. During his time in the Senate, Benjamin served as the Senate's senior assistant majority leader and chair of the Senate Committee on Budget and Revenue.

Benjamin interned at Bill Lynch & Associates. He is a Brown University trustee who was elected by alumni. For three years, he worked as a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley. Benjamin was a vocal supporter of Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2007. He was a co-founder of "Harlem4Obama," a group that organized a fundraiser for then-Senator Barack Obama in 2008. "Harlem4Obama's" infrastructure aided Benjamin's organization, "Young Professionals United for Change (YP4C)," which established a mentoring program at the Wadleigh School and organized young people following Obama's election. In 2012, Benjamin served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and raised funds for Obama's reelection campaign.
In 2010, Benjamin became a managing partner at Genesis Companies, a Harlem-based minority business organization that builds affordable housing. Benjamin worked with the Abyssinian Development Corporation to purchase and redevelop dilapidated structures, directing redevelopment and repair work to as many suppliers as possible.
He also collaborated with First Corinthians Baptist Church to establish the 119th Street Dream Center and the 114th Street Hope Center. New York State Senator Bill Perkins ran for and won a seat on the New York City Council in 2017. Benjamin then ran for New York State Senate District 30 in Harlem to replace Perkins.
The New York Times reported in March 2022 that the FBI was investigating whether Benjamin was involved in funneling fraudulent contributions to his 2021 campaign for New York City Comptroller, and that subpoenas would be issued to his campaign advisers.
Benjamin was arrested on bribery charges on April 12, 2022, for alleged campaign finance fraud committed during his tenure as a Manhattan state senator. According to sources who spoke to The New York Times, Benjamin allegedly directed state funds to a Harlem real estate investor in exchange for thousands of dollars in illegal campaign contributions for his failed bid to become New York City comptroller in 2021.
