Anto Antony Punnathaniyil represents Kerala's Pathanamthitta electoral district in the 15th and 16th Lok Sabha. He is a member of the Indian National Congress, and on May 16, 2009, he was elected as a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate by 408,232 votes, defeating K. Ananthagopan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with 297,026 votes, B. Radhakrishna Menon of the Bharatiya Janata Party with 56,294 votes, and three other candidates. In the 2014 general elections, he was re-elected from the same constituency by a margin of 58,836 over LDF-backed independent candidate Mr. Peelipose Thomas, an ex-DCC president.

The Congress Party has renominated Anto Antony to run for the Pathanamthitta LokSabha Constituency in the 2019 General Elections.

In 2004, he was defeated by CPI(M) candidate K. Suresh Kurup in the Kottayam by 341,213 votes to his 298,299. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Pathanamthitta in 2009, 2014, and 2019.
