Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay, during the British Raj. He is the son of Naval Tata, who was born in Surat and later adopted into the Tata family, and Sooni Tata, Jamsetji Tata's niece. Hormusji Tata, Tata's biological grandfather, was a blood relative of the Tatas. Tata's parents divorced when he was 10 years old, and he was raised and adopted by Navajbai Tata, his grandmother and Ratanji Tata's widow. He was raised with his younger brother Jimmy Tata and a half-brother, Noel Tata, from Naval Tata's second marriage to Simone Tata.

Ratan Tata is a former chairman of Tata Sons and an Indian industrialist. He was also the Tata Group's chairman from 1990 to 2012, serving as interim chairman from October 2016 to February 2017. He is still in charge of the organization's charitable trusts. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour, in 2008, after receiving the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian honour, in 2000.

He is the son of Naval Tata, who was adopted by Ratanji Tata, the son of Jamsetji Tata, the Tata Group's founder. He received a bachelor's degree in architecture from Cornell University College of Architecture and a management course from Harvard Business School in 1975.

He joined Tata in 1961 and worked on the Tata Steel shop floor. He later took over as chairman of Tata Sons after J. R. D. Tata retired in 1991. During his tenure, the Tata Group acquired Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus in an attempt to transform Tata from a primarily Indian conglomerate into a global corporation. Tata is also one of the world's most generous philanthropists, donating 60-65% of his earnings to charity.
