After moving back to the UK, she began her career working for a small radio station and then moved on to cable television in Glasgow. In March of 2000, she began her training as a journalist for BBC North East and Cumbria. 

Kuenssberg was awarded a regional Royal Television Society award for the job that she did as a home affairs journalist, and she also developed pieces for Niall Dickson, who was the editor in charge of social affairs.In 2009, she was promoted to the role of chief political correspondent at the BBC.

Kuenssberg was an employee of the BBC News channel, in addition to Daily Politics and the BBC One bulletins.

It was revealed on the 12th of November, 2013, that she would be leaving ITV to take the position of chief correspondent and Newsnight presenter at the BBC, following Gavin Esler in both roles. She became a member of the Newsnight cast and crew in February of 2014. 

Between the UK general election in 2017 and Brexit in 2020, Kuenssberg also co-hosted the BBC's Brexitcast podcast with Katya Adler, Adam Fleming, and Chris Mason. The Brexitcast podcast, which was later renamed the Newscast podcast, was broadcast by the BBC.

She became the first woman to ever occupy the position of political editor at the BBC when she was given the position in July of 2015.

On Daily Politics in January 2016, Kuenssberg was the one responsible for making the arrangements that allowed Labour MP Stephen Doughty to publicly announce his retirement from his position as a shadow foreign minister.

An formal complaint was lodged about the incident by Seumas Milne, who served as the director of communications for the Labour Party. However, Robbie Gibb, who served as the head of live political programming for the BBC at the time, rejected the complaint.
