Sunak was born in Southampton on 12 May 1980 to Hindu parents of Punjabi Indian heritage, Yashvir and Usha Sunak, who were of African descent. He is the oldest sibling of three. His father was born and raised in Kenya (present-day Kenya), while his mother was born in Tanganyika (which later became part of Tanzania).

His grandfathers were born in Punjab province, British India, and migrated to the United Kingdom in the 1960s from East Africa with their families.Ramdas Sunak, his paternal grandpa, was from Gujranwala and migrated to Nairobi in 1935 to work as a clerk, where he was joined by his Delhi-born wife Suhag Rani Sunak in 1937.

Raghubir Sain Berry MBE, his maternal grandfather, worked in Tanganyika as a tax official and had an arranged marriage with 16-year-old Tanganyika-born Sraksha, with whom he had three daughters. The family migrated to the United Kingdom in 1966, with Sraksha selling her bridal jewelry to fund the journey.

Raghubir Berry joined the Inland Revenue in the United Kingdom and was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) as a collector in the 1988 Birthday Honours list.Yashvir was a general practitioner, and Usha ran a neighborhood pharmacy as a pharmacist.

In his resignation letter dated 5 July 2022, he cited his disagreements with Johnson over economic policies.
