Nalini was born in 1967 in Ambalavanapuram, Tamil Nadu, Tirunelveli.She earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Ethiraj College in Chennai, after which she began working for a private corporation in Chennai. Nalini was the only member of the five-person assassination squad to survive the explosion that killed Rajiv Gandhi. On 21 May 1991, Nalini accompanied the assassin's team, including the key conspirator Sivarasan, to Rajiv Gandhi's political rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Special Investigation Team investigations revealed that Nalini provided shelter to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) operatives who carried out the assassination. During the planning phase, they stayed with her and her husband.
After several days on the run, Nalini and her husband Murugan were apprehended at the Saidapet bus station in Chennai on 14 June 1991. (Madras). She was found guilty of the offenses she was charged with under Section 120B (participation in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination plot) read with Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (murder). As a result, the TADA Court sentenced her and 25 others to death for their participation in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
Several human rights organizations criticized the court's closed-door proceedings.
