Susan Margaret Collins is an American politician who has served as the senior United States Senator for the state of Maine since 1997. She is a member of the Republican Party. Collins was one of seven Republican senators who voted in Donald Trump's second impeachment hearing on February 13, 2021, to convict him of incitement to insurgency. She was also the sole Republican senator to oppose Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court nomination.

Collins was born in Caribou, Maine, to a family of six children, where her great-great-great-grandfather, Samuel W. Collins, established a logging business in 1844. Patricia and Donald F. Collins, her parents, were both mayors of Caribou. Her father, a decorated WWII veteran, also served in the Maine Legislature, first in the House and then in the Senate for four terms. Collins' mother was born in Barrancabermeja, Colombia, to American parents.

Collins has ancestors from both England and Ireland. Her uncle, Samuel W. Collins Jr., served on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court from 1988 to 1994 and the Maine Senate from 1973 to 1984. Collins attended Caribou High School and was president of the student council. During her senior year of high school in 1971, she was chosen to participate in the United States Senate Youth Program, during which she visited Washington, D.C. for the first time and had a two-hour conversation with Margaret Chase Smith, Maine's first female United States Senator, who was also a Republican.

From 1975 to 1987, Collins worked as a legislative assistant to U.S. Representative and later U.S. Senator William Cohen. She worked as the staff director of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs' Oversight of Government Management Subcommittee from 1981 to 1987. Collins joined Governor John R. McKernan Jr.'s cabinet in 1987 as Commissioner of Professional and Financial Regulation. 

President George H. W. Bush appointed her as the Small Business Administration's New England regional director in 1992. 

After briefly serving in this position until President Bill Clinton's election in 1992, she moved to Massachusetts in 1993 and became Deputy State Treasurer under Joe Malone. 

Collins was elected to the Senate in 1996. During the campaign, she stated that if elected, she would only serve two terms. In 2020, Collins will be challenged by Democratic State House Speaker Sara Gideon. Collins spent $23 million on the election, while Gideon spent more than $48 million, making it the most expensive in Maine history. Collins' defeat was an important part of the Democrats' strategy for gaining a Senate majority, so the campaign had national ramifications. Collins won by a large margin despite trailing Gideon in every public poll during the campaign. 

In May 2021, it was revealed that the FBI was investigating a defense contractor in Hawaii who allegedly channeled $150,000 to a pro-Collins super PAC and repaid payments to Collins' 2020 campaign, both of which were illegal. According to a spokeswoman, the campaign was unaware of the communication. Collins cast her 8,000th consecutive roll call vote on October 28, 2021; only Chuck Grassley and William Proxmire had longer streaks. 

Collins has stated that she will vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, making her the only Republican senator to do so. This is consistent with her voting record, in which she has supported almost every Supreme Court nominee with the exception of Amy Coney Barret.
