Anthony Norman Albanese has been the Leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Australian Labor Party since 2019. (ALP). He has been a member of parliament (MP) for the Grayndler division since 1996. Albanese was Australia's deputy prime minister in the Rudd administration's second term in 2013, and a cabinet minister in the Rudd and Gillard administrations from 2007 to 2013.

Albanese was born in Sydney and attended St Mary's Cathedral College before attending the University of Sydney to study economics. Before entering parliament, he joined the Labor Party as a student and worked as a party official and research officer. Albanese was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996, winning the Grayndler seat in New South Wales. He was first appointed to the Shadow Cabinet in 2001, where he served in various capacities before becoming Manager of Opposition Business in 2006.

After Labor won the 2007 election, Albanese was named Leader of the House. He was also appointed Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, as well as Minister for Infrastructure and Transport. Throughout the subsequent leadership squabbles between 2010 and 2013, Albanese was vocal in his criticism of both Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard's actions, pleading for unity. After the final leadership ballot between the two in June 2013, Albanese was elected Deputy Leader of the Labor Party and sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia the next day.

Following Labor's defeat in the 2013 election, Albanese ran against Bill Shorten in the subsequent leadership election, which was the first to include both party members and MPs. Despite receiving a large majority of votes, Shorten received a larger majority of Labor MPs; Shorten later appointed Albanese to his Shadow Cabinet. Shorten resigned after Labor suffered its third consecutive election defeat in 2019. Albanese was the only candidate nominated in a leadership election, and he was elected Labor Party Leader without opposition, becoming Leader of the Opposition.
