Medvedchuk escaped from house arrest and went missing on February 28, 2022, four days after Russia invaded Ukraine. On March 8, 2022, he was fired as co-chairman of the Opposition Platform — For Life. On April 12, 2022, the Ukrainian secret service arrested Medvedchuk on treason charges.

Viktor Volodymyrovych Medvedchuk is a Ukrainian lawyer, business magnate, and politician who was elected as Ukraine's People's Deputy on August 29, 2019. He is the chairman of the pro-Russian political organization Ukrainian Choice, and he opposes Ukraine's membership in the European Union.

Medvedchuk served in the Ukrainian parliament from 1997 to 2002. Medvedchuk was former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma's chief of staff from 2002 to 2005. He remained out of national politics until 2018.

Medvedchuk was elected chairman of the political council of the For Life party in November 2018, which later merged into the Opposition Platform — For Life party. The party won 37 seats on the national party list and six constituency seats in the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election. Medvedchuk was elected to parliament after finishing third on the Opposition Platform — For Life's 2019 election list.
