In 2007, Finkenauer worked as the Iowa volunteer coordinator for Joe Biden's presidential campaign. She later worked as a legislative assistant to Iowa Democratic State Representative Todd Taylor and as a communications specialist for the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque.

Murphy resigned his seat to run for Congress in 2014, which he lost, while Finkenauer ran for and won Murphy's old seat.
