Christensen was elected to the Mackay City Council in 2004 and the Mackay Regional Council in 2008. Christensen won the seat with a 5.02-point swing on a two-party preferred vote with a margin of 2.43 points.

Christensen gained national attention during the election campaign for essays he wrote in the 1990s for The Student Advocate, a conservative university newsletter. The newsletter articles contained slurs directed at Jews, gays, and women. Despite his claim that the articles were taken out of context, Christensen expressed regret for releasing the comments.
