Grant Wahl Career Highights
Wahl began his career as an intern with the Miami Herald in 1996. In November 1996, he joined Sports Illustrated, where he covered college basketball and soccer. During his career, Wahl covered 12 NCAA basketball tournaments, eight FIFA World Cups, and four Olympic games.
Wahl rose to prominence with his cover story "Where's Daddy?" (1998), which documented the growing number of illegitimate children born to professional athletes. Wahl also received four Magazine Story of the Year awards from the United States. Basketball Journalists Association
Wahl was promoted to senior writer at Sports Illustrated in October 2000. Wahl primarily covered soccer for both the magazine and SI.com. In his first book, The Beckham Experiment (2009), Wahl focused on David Beckham's move to the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer and his impact on the league. It went on to become a New York Times Best Seller.
Wahl was robbed of his phone and wallet at gunpoint in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in October 2009, while covering the fourth round of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification; earlier that day, he had interviewed interim Honduran president Roberto Micheletti, who later apologised to Wahl for the incident.

Wahl suddenly collapsed in the press box of Lusail Iconic Stadium in Doha on December 9, 2022, while covering Argentina's quarterfinal match against the Netherlands.Local paramedics responded very quickly,and treated him for 30 minutes before taking him to the hospital.Wahl's brother said he was given CPR. Wahl was pronounced dead early on December 10 at a local hospital.He said the family is in touch with U.S. State Department and White House officials. Eric Wahl said his brother received death threats and believed Wahl was killed.
