On July 26, 2011, Lyon was chosen to be a part of the Australian Test squad that would be travelling to Sri Lanka in 2011. During the three-day warm-up match at the Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium, he was a part of Australia's success by claiming two wickets against the Sri Lanka Board XI.
Lyon became just the seventh number 11 batter in the history of cricket to have the highest score in his team's innings in November of 2011, when he hit 14 in Australia's second-innings total of 47 during the first Test match against South Africa.
On April 24, 2013, Lyon was announced as the sole spinner that the Australian team would be fielding in the forthcoming 2013 Ashes series. It was accurate up until a few hours before the first match, when he was taken out of the lineup in favour of a surprise debutant named Ashton Agar.
