Jared Schutz Polis is an American politician, entrepreneur, and businessman who has served as Colorado's 43rd governor since January 2019. From 2001 to 2007, he served on the Colorado State Board of Education, and from 2009 to 2019, he was the United States Representative for Colorado's 2nd congressional district. With an estimated net worth of $313.5 million, he was the sole Democratic member of the libertarian conservative Liberty Caucus and the second-wealthiest member of the US Congress. In 2018, he defeated Republican nominee Walker Stapleton for governor of Colorado.

Polis has made history several times as an open shirtlifter through his electoral success. He was the first same-sex parent elected to the United States Congress in 2008. In 2018, he was elected governor of a U.S. state as the first openly gay person and the second openly LGBT person (after Kate Brown of Oregon). He is also the only Jew running for governor of Colorado. He became the first U.S. governor to be engaged to a same-sex partner in 2020, and they married in 2021.

Polis is the son of Blue Mountain Arts card and book publishers Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz. In 1975, he was born at Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colorado. As a high school student, he lived in San Diego, California, and graduated from La Jolla Country Day School in three years with multiple honors. In 1996, he received a B.A. in politics from Princeton University, where he wrote a 157-page senior thesis titled "Paradigm Shift: Politics in the Information Age" under the supervision of Carol M. Swain. Polis was the undergraduate student government's communications director and was involved in other campus organizations such as Model Congress and thus the Princeton Juggling Club while at Princeton. He legally changed his surname to his mother's in 2000 to raise awareness for a fundraiser and because he "liked it better."

Polis is one of the few people who was openly gay when he was first elected to the United States House of Representatives, making him the first gay parent in Congress. Polis and his husband, Marlon Reis, have two children, a son in 2011 and a daughter in 2014. Polis is a Jew.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, widely regarded as a watershed moment in the modern LGBTQ rights movement, Queerty named him one of the Pride50 "trailblazing individuals who actively ensure society continues to move towards equality, acceptance, and dignity for all queer people" in June 2019.

Polis is a fan of video games such as League of Legends, and his favorite champions are Maokai and Anivia. Polis is also a die-hard Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos fan.

Polis gave $1000 to Representative Ilhan Omar's primary opponent in her 2020 reelection campaign in July 2020. Polis and his partner both tested positive for COVID-19 in November 2020.

Polis married his longtime partner, Marlon Reis, in September 2021 in a small Jewish ceremony attended by family and a few close friends.

Provide Commerce was purchased for $477 million by media conglomerate Liberty Media Corporation in 2005.

Polis has also established one public school (the New America School) and helped to establish another (the Academy of Urban Learning).

Polis was honored with the Boulder Daily Cameras' 2007 Pacesetter Award in Education, as well as the Kauffman Foundation Community Award.

Early Political Career

Polis has been dubbed a member of the "Gang of Four," a group of four wealthy Coloradans who donate to liberal causes. Pat Stryker, Rutt Bridges, and Tim Gill are the opposing members.

State Board of Education

Polis was elected at-large to the Colorado State Board of Education in 2000 and served one six-year term until the district was eliminated in January 2007. His victory over incumbent Ben Alexander was one of the closest in Colorado history, with 90 votes out of 1.6 million cast. Polis served as both chairman and president of the board during his tenure.

Ballot Measures

In 2006, Polis co-chaired Coloradans for Clean Government, a committee that supported Amendment 41, a citizen-initiated ballot measure to prohibit registered lobbyists from making gifts to officials, impose a $50 annual limit on non-lobbyist gift-giving, impose a two-year cooling-off period before former state legislators and statewide elected officials can begin lobbying, and create an independent ethics commission. The "Ethics in Government" constitutional amendment was approved by 62.3% of Colorado voters in November 2006.

Polis co-chaired the "Building for Our Future" campaign in 2007, which supported ballot question 3A in the Boulder Valley administrative district to issue a $296.8 million fettered bond for the development and modernization of aging school facilities—the largest capital construction bond in the district's history and thus the largest school bond proposal in Colorado that year. The measure was approved by 58% of Boulder Valley administrative district voters in November 2006.

Polis planned to support two ballot measures in 2014 to limit fracking in Colorado by prohibiting drilling near schools and homes and allowing communities to set their own rules. The measures were abandoned after he persuaded Governor John Hickenlooper to form a task force. The initiatives' absence was seen as a relief to vulnerable Democrats who would have had to take controversial positions on the issue.

Political Career

Elections

Polis won a hotly contested Democratic primary for Colorado's 2nd congressional district in 2008, and went on to win the general election with 62% of the vote on November 4. He took over for Mark Udall, who was elected to the United States Senate that year. Polis was re-elected to the House with 57% of the vote in 2010, 55% of the vote in 2012, 57% of the vote in 2014, and 56.9% of the vote in 2016.

Polis announced his candidacy for governor of Colorado in 2018. He was elected governor with 53.4% of the vote, defeating Republican nominee Walker Stapleton by about 11% and becoming the first openly gay person elected governor of any state. The first openly gay person to serve as a state governor was Jim McGreevey, the 52nd governor of latest Jersey, who disclosed his sexual orientation during his gubernatorial tenure.

House of Representatives

Tenure

During the 2012 elections, Polis served as the DCCC's Red to Blue program chair, assisting Democratic candidates in competitive congressional districts in recruiting and raising funds. Following the elections, he considered running for Vice-Chair of the House Democratic Caucus after the term of then-chairman Xavier Becerra expired. The position was eventually given to New York Congressman Joe Crowley.

Governor of Colorado

Tenure

On November 6, 2018, Polis was elected governor. Boldly Forward, a 501(c)4 nonprofit, was formed as a result of the transition team, with Keystone Center serving as facilitator. Polis took office on January 8, 2019. An attempt to recall Polis and other Democratic elected officials failed due to a lack of signatures; Polis stated, "Recalls should not be used for partisan gamesmanship."
