Eric Holcomb's Political Journey and Leadership
Eric Holcomb began his political career in 1997 as an aide to U.S. Representative John Hostettler. After an unsuccessful bid for the Indiana House of Representatives in 2000, he served as an advisor to Governor Mitch Daniels from 2003 to 2011, eventually becoming Deputy Chief of Staff.
He managed Daniels’ 2008 gubernatorial campaign and later became Chairman of the Indiana Republican Party in 2011. In 2013, Holcomb became chief of staff to U.S. Senator Dan Coats but withdrew from a 2016 Senate race after Coats announced his retirement.
Lieutenant Governor and Transition to Governor
In March 2016, Holcomb was sworn in as Indiana’s Lieutenant Governor, succeeding Sue Ellspermann. When Governor Mike Pence became Donald Trump’s running mate, Holcomb was chosen as the Republican nominee for governor. Partnering with Suzanne Crouch, he defeated Democrat John Gregg in the 2016 election.
Holcomb’s "Next Level Agenda" focused on economic growth, infrastructure, education, public health, and efficient government. His administration tackled the opioid crisis, pardoned wrongfully convicted individuals, and boosted foreign investment, increasing foreign direct investment in Indiana by 300% since 2017.
He led international trade trips to strengthen Indiana’s global ties and passed a $1.2 billion annual infrastructure funding plan through fuel taxes and fees. However, his term faced controversies, including allegations of interfering in an OSHA investigation involving Amazon.
Holcomb was reelected in 2020 with 57% of the vote, setting a record for the most votes received by an Indiana governor. His second term began in January 2021, with continued focus on economic growth, public health, and addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
